En una sociedad como la actual, que es capaz de pagar miles de euros por un vestido o un objeto de alguno de sus ídolos, no debe resultar difícil comprender el entusiasmo, la pugna por su posesión y el comercio, incluso fraudulento, de las reliquias en la Edad Media, cuando se atribuían al contacto con los mismos poderes benéficos que, en última instancia, incluían nada menos que la salvación eterna de los fieles que creían en ellas. Y, en aquellos tiempos, junto a la exigencia canónica de incrustar algunas en el ara del altar, las reliquias significaban, para monjes, cabildos catedralicios o simples párrocos, la posesión de un instrumento de dominio espiritual, que recordaba la presencia y la virtus de los santos y sugería la posibilidad inmediata del milagro. No extraña por ello que distintos tipos de reliquias fueran encontrando en las comunidades religiosas acomodo en lugares destacados y embellecidos, fueran sepulcros o relicarios, que se convertirían en polos de atracción peregrinatoria, mientras que sus más destacados posesores laicos, esto es, reyes o nobles, hacían de ellas instrumentos complementarios que venían a otorgar una pátina sacra a su dominio sobre los hombres. Por esos caminos no fueron infrecuentes los abusos, que, para los espíritus más sensibles, se convirtieron en tema de necesario debate a fin de que el fiel cristiano no olvidara que las reliquias, como las imágenes, constituían sólo un instrumento mediador, a través del santo correspondiente, en el contacto y la adoración a Dios, pero nunca debían ser objeto de simple y milagrera consideración fetichista.
