En el verano de 2026 un eclipse total de sol será visible en buena parte de España, un acontecimiento al que se ha dado la máxima importancia en nuestro país. Aprovechando el interés suscitado por este fenómeno, hemos decidido dedicar esta edición al papel que tuvieron la astronomía y la astrología en los siglos del románico, desde la ciencia y la religión al arte de la época.
La observación de los astros ha formado parte de la vida del hombre desde los tiempos más remotos. La contemplación del sol, la luna y las estrellas marcaron el acontecer diario de nuestros antepasados, mientras que otros fenómenos celestes, como los eclipses o los cometas despertaron en ellos ciertas inquietudes que se han mantenido hasta nuestros días.
Toda la Edad Media estuvo profundamente marcada por una visión del cosmos en la que la astronomía y la astrología desempeñaban una función esencial. En una sociedad donde la fe cristiana impregnaba todos los ámbitos, el universo era concebido como un orden perfecto creado por Dios y los astros se interpretaban como signos que revelaban su voluntad. Son muchas las referencias astronómicas presentes en la Biblia, como la creación de los astros por Dios en el cuarto día o las señales que marcaron el nacimiento y muerte de Cristo: la estrella de Belén y el eclipse de la crucifixión.
Esta concepción del cosmos no era meramente especulativa e influía en aspectos como la liturgia, la medicina o la propia organización del tiempo. La astronomía servía para calcular el calendario litúrgico, determinar las fiestas religiosas y regular la vida monástica. El ciclo solar y lunar marcaba las faenas agrícolas. Por su parte, la astrología gozaba de gran prestigio intelectual. Se creía que la posición de los planetas influía en el carácter y el destino humano. El zodíaco, representado en relieves y manuscritos, simbolizaba la armonía entre el microcosmos humano y el macrocosmos celestial.
Como en ediciones anteriores, se han programado dos convocatorias con idénticos contenidos, dirigidas ambas a un público muy amplio, desde investigadores y estudiantes universitarios hasta aficionados al arte románico en general.

La edición de abril se desarrollará en la sede central de la Fundación Santa María la Real (Avda. Ronda, 1-3, junto al puente mayor) y la de julio en el refectorio del monasterio de Santa María la Real.
