A comienzos del siglo XIX se acuñó el término “románico” para designar la arquitectura de los siglos XI, XII y parte del XIII en la que se percibía una clara inspiración o evocación de las formas, diseños y elementos constructivos utilizados anteriormente por los romanos. Poco después el término se aplicó también al resto de manifestaciones artísticas del mismo momento, como la escultura, la pintura o las artes suntuarias. Sin embargo, el camino que siguieron estas formas antiguas hasta fraguar en el nuevo lenguaje estético del siglo XI fue largo y pausado.
En este taller analizaremos algunos de los canales de transferencia de esta herencia antigua en la arquitectura y en la escultura románicas, como el expolio y reciclaje de materiales romanos. En este sentido, fue muy relevante el papel que tuvo la reutilización de sarcófagos romanos en la Edad Media por parte de las élites gobernantes. Estas piezas se convirtieron en transmisores directos de esa corriente antiquizante en la plástica románica y sus temas figurativos sirvieron de modelo e inspiración para otras creaciones, como capiteles o miniaturas.
Del mismo modo, muchos temas presentes en la decoración románica tomaron como fuente de inspiración modelos de la tardoantigüedad: hojas de acanto, crismones, mensarios, bestiarios, espinarios e, incluso, las posibles alusiones a Constantino que subyacen bajo determinadas representaciones de jinetes. Como en ediciones anteriores, continuaremos con la norma de impartir todas las lecciones al pie mismo de los monumentos visitados, facilitando de esa manera no sólo el acercamiento práctico al edificio sino también una mayor interrelación entre profesores y alumnos.
