El programa de esta cuadragésima edición de los Seminarios sobre Historia del Monacato de Aguilar de Campoo se orienta a mostrar cómo un instrumento, como el de la escritura, en buena medida, monopolio en la Edad Media de las comunidades monásticas, es utilizado por éstas desde el núcleo intelectual que constituye su scriptorium para muy diversos objetivos: la pura reflexión sobre su condición monacal y su forma de entender el espacio que la cobija, la copia y producción de textos que inspiren la realización de sus obras escultóricas y pictóricas y, muy particularmente, la construcción de una memoria interesada de su historia o de la de sus bienhechores. Dicha memoria puede partir del texto escrito en un pergamino para convertirse después en un verdadero archivo (el cartulario) o proyectarse en una crónica que reivindica un pasado o se transforma luego en la materialidad de unos sepulcros historiados o en leyendas, especialmente hagiográficas, que se enriquecen con el paso de los años y se exhiben en momentos oportunos hasta que algunas de ellas caen en las manos apropiadas que las transforman en literatura. Y todo ello siempre bajo el signo de una búsqueda de fieles a los que adoctrinar o de los que esperar su donación o su limosna.
