En los últimos años han surgido en la Historia del Arte nuevas corrientes metodológicas que tratan de analizar el edificio románico desde perspectivas que van más allá de lo puramente artístico. Estas investigaciones han centrado su interés en la funcionalidad de la arquitectura, del mobiliario y de la decoración, contribuyendo así a un mejor conocimiento de los usos que se daban en cada ámbito espacial. Si la iglesia románica era ante todo un lugar donde se desarrollaba una liturgia determinada, fueron precisamente las prácticas o ritos asociados a esta los que condicionaron en gran medida su morfología y decoración.
Dentro y fuera del edificio religioso tenía lugar un rico y variado ceremonial que iba desde los actos que se desarrollaban en los espacios interiores del templo hasta aquellos que tenían lugar en los pórticos, en los atrios o en sus entornos. En la iglesia se aplicaban los sacramentos, se celebraban las festividades, se rendía homenaje a los difuntos, se daba culto a las reliquias y se realizaban ritos propiciatorios que buscaban el auxilio espiritual de la divinidad o de los santos. Estas ceremonias, donde se unían lo visible y lo invisible, se llevaban a cabo en ámbitos concretos y con una puesta en escena perfectamente codificada. La interacción entre hombres, imágenes y dispositivos conformaron de esta manera un ritual performativo y sensorial al que no eran ajenas las iglesias románicas que han llegado hasta nuestros días.
El curso va dirigido a todo tipo de público, desde estudiantes universitarios a entusiastas del arte románico en general.
