Durante la Edad Media el culto a las reliquias fue una de las formas de religiosidad popular que más arraigo tuvo. No hubo monasterio, catedral o santuario que no custodiara algún vestigio sacro de estas características y que no se preocupara por su acopio, traslado y dignificación del lugar donde eran veneradas o del recipiente que las contenía. Reyes, nobles, obispos y monjes se afanaron por conseguir tan preciado tesoro que no solo les garantizaba un sustento económico para la institución que patrocinaban, a través de las limosnas o las peregrinaciones, sino también una intermediación entre el hombre y lo sagrado.
La variedad de reliquias era infinita, desde las que estaban vinculadas a Cristo hasta los despojos corporales de los santos, sin olvidar aquellos objetos o telas que habían poseído en vida o que habían estado en contacto directo con sus restos. Su poder taumatúrgico o salvífico se transmitía por igual en todas ellas.
En este libro exploraremos algunos aspectos vinculados a este fenómeno, tanto desde el punto de vista histórico o del pensamiento religioso, como de las manifestaciones artísticas que se generaron en torno a ello durante los siglos del románico. La invención y adquisición de reliquias, el traslado de los restos, los estuches que las contuvieron y el espacio destinado para su exhibición son algunos de los temas que se tratarán en estas jornadas.
