La leyenda cuenta cómo Krok, mítico juez y líder de su tribu, anciano sabio, tuvo tres hijas; la menor de estas, de nombre Libuše, heredaría la autoridad y las virtudes de su padre y, siendo reconocida como su sucesora, pronto concertarían su matrimonio con un labrador llamado Přemysl, al tiempo que ella profetizaba la fundación de una ciudad «cuya fama alcanzará las estrellas». Habrían nacido de esta manera Praga, el germen del Estado bohemio y la primera de las dinastías que ocuparía su trono, los Přemyslidas. El posterior paso del tiempo verá sucederse en la corona a diferentes familias mientras el emplazamiento se iba configurando. De este modo, a aquella fortificación inicial de la margen izquierda del Moldava paulatinamente le acompañarían diferentes suburbios y asentamientos cercanos. En su misma orilla se levantarían Hradčany y Malá Strana (Barrio Pequeño), dependientes de la fortaleza; frente a ella, Staré Město (Ciudad Vieja), Vyšehrad y, más adelante, Nové Město (Ciudad Nueva), quedando así organizada la aglomeración de Praga en época bajomedieval. La tradición gótica establecida entonces por la Casa de Luxemburgo sería continuada por los Habsburgo en tiempos ya del Renacimiento y el Barroco, del Sacro Imperio o del Imperio Austríaco, hasta alcanzar la convulsa centuria del Novecientos cuando surgirían los sentimientos nacionalistas que desembocarían en el nacimiento de la República de Checoslovaquia a comienzos del siglo XX. Corresponderían esos últimos momentos con las vidas de Smetana y Kafka, cuyos centenarios se celebran en 2024 y que bien pueden servir de excusa para un viaje en el que intentar disfrutar la historia y el patrimonio de la capital bohemia.
