El palacio de Versalles es el palacio de referencia de los siglos XVII y XVIII en Francia. Aunque fue el rey Luis XIII quien inició su construcción, será su sucesor, Luis XIV o el rey Sol, el que lo engrandeció, ubicando aquí su principal residencia. Fue el centro de poder francés más importante con los borbones, pero también se convirtió en un lugar de referencia artística que lo ha convertido en uno de los monumentos patrimoniales franceses más visitados.
Nuestro taller artesanal de Ornamentos Arquitectónicos ha querido rendir un homenaje a esta obra de arte con la realización de un ajedrez, cuyas piezas están basadas en algunos de los muchos monumentos que alberga el recinto.
El peón utiliza como modelo uno de los característicos vasos que decoran sus maravillosos jardines.
Para la torre se toma como referencia la torre de Marlborough. Está situada dentro del denominado Pequeño Trianón de los jardines. Forma parte de la Aldea de la Reina, construcción mandada edificar por la reina María Antonieta en 1782, con el objetivo de crear un lugar en el que alejarse de la rigidez de la corte.
El alfil está inspirado en una estatua del Dios Baco. La figura está ubicada en la denominada Parterre d´Eau, situado sobre el estanque de Latona. Forma parte de una serie de esculturas que encargo Luis XIV en 1664 para representar diferentes elementos de la Antigüedad Clásica, pedido que se denomina como la Grande Commande. La escultura fue realizada por Thomas Regnaudin.
El caballo se corresponde con uno de los que aparece en la escultura "el carro del sol", realizada en plomo dorado por el artista Jean Bautiste Tuby entre 1668 – 71. El conjunto, ubicado en el centro del Estanque de Apolo, representa el mito de este Dios clásico.
La reina está inspirada por la escultura que representa a Europa. Figura que forma parte de esa Grande Commande realizada por Luis XIV, mencionada al hablar del alfil. El escultor de la pieza fue Pierre Mazeline.
Como no podía ser de otra manera, el rey es representado por Luis XIV. Para esta figura, las maquetistas de Ornamentos Arquitectónicos han elegido la imagen que representa el Poema Heroico, incluido dentro de esta Grande Commande realizada por Luis XIV. El rey aparece vestido a la manera clásica, coronado con laureles y una trompeta en la mano. Fue realizada por Jean de Rouilly.
