Situada en Centroamérica, entre el océano Pacífico y el mar Caribe, Guatemala es un país donde la geografía, la historia y las tradiciones se entrelazan de forma excepcional. Su territorio forma parte de la antigua Mesoamérica, cuna de una de las civilizaciones más brillantes del mundo prehispánico.
El viaje nos llevará a descubrir el legado de la cultura maya, eje fundamental de la identidad guatemalteca. Visitaremos grandes centros ceremoniales como Tikal, en plena selva del Petén, Quiriguá, y Copán, ya en Honduras, cuyas estelas y templos permiten comprender la complejidad política, científica y artística de este pueblo milenario. Este pasado indígena sigue vivo hoy: alrededor del 40 % de la población guatemalteca es indígena, perteneciente a distintos pueblos mayas, además de las culturas garífuna y xinka.
La ruta también se adentra en la etapa colonial, cuando Guatemala formó parte del Virreinato de Nueva España. La Antigua Guatemala, con su trazado urbano, iglesias, conventos y casas señoriales, es uno de los mejores ejemplos del legado español en Centroamérica y un escenario clave para entender la historia posterior del país.
La experiencia se completa con una inmersión en la vida cotidiana y las tradiciones locales: los coloridos mercados indígenas, los trajes tradicionales y las costumbres transmitidas de generación en generación. Además, por la fecha del viaje, podremos observar cómo se vive el Día de Muertos, una celebración profundamente simbólica en la que se fusionan creencias mayas y cristianas.
Todo ello enmarcado por paisajes de enorme belleza: la selva tropical del Petén, el curso del Río Dulce hacia el Caribe, la región volcánica del lago Atitlán y la costa caribeña de Livingston, donde la cultura garífuna aporta una identidad única. Un recorrido completo por la historia, la naturaleza y las tradiciones del auténtico “corazón del mundo maya”.
