El altar mayor constituye el epicentro ritual, espiritual y, casi siempre, material y emocional de toda iglesia. Su instalación en el presbiterio mayor comportó la generación de una escenografía cargada de significación, que deslindaba ese lugar de otros del espacio eclesiástico, incluidos los ámbitos de los altares secundarios (transepto, naves o tribunas). El propósito de los promotores eclesiásticos era, ante todo, revelar y ensalzar los santos titulares y la Divinidad y, en ocasiones, identificar heráldica o escriturariamente al ideólogo de la obra.
Esta publicación propone una comprensión más razonada de los contextos físicos de los ábsides mayores y de los lugares de los altares secundarios, en un escrutinio simbiótico con los equipamientos artísticos destinado a guarnecer los altares y sus entornos inmediatos. Los análisis sobre la materialidad de las estructuras arquitectónicas y los dispositivos visuales se trenzarán con una comprensión fenomenológica de las obras y litúrgica de los ritos y devociones estipulados. Metodológicamente, se propone una explicación satisfactoria en torno a cómo se integran los elementos materiales y los fenómenos intangibles. Además, se postula el ‘decoro visual’ como sistema integrado prolífico y epifánico, convocado para manifestar y celebrar los misterios divinos y aglutinar las reacciones humanas ante ellos.
