La historiografía nacional e internacional ha considerado la península ibérica medieval de tres maneras diferentes, pero complementarias:
a. como un dilatado escenario en el que reinos cristianos y soberanías andalusíes mantuvieron constantes conflictos militares; b. como un marco de cohabitación de personas de etnias y religiones diferentes, aunque no incompatibles; c. como una encrucijada cultural en la que promotores políticos y religiosos, junto con artífices excelentes, propiciaron deslumbrantes intercambios y diálogos artísticos.
La historia del arte medieval hispano requiere estudios actualizados, perspicaces y críticos que descarten explicar aquella producción artística recurriendo a conceptos tan simplificadores y estériles como "influencia". No hay justificación para seguir asumiendo que las comunicaciones culturales, y particularmente las artísticas, se produjeron de manera unidireccional, jerárquica y subordinante. El examen de las obras revela, en cambio, que la comunicación fluyó de modo multidireccional y a menudo reversible.
Este volumen de Codex Aquilarensis propone una novedosa mirada a la deslumbrante producción artística medieval hispana. Una selecta colección de estudios reconsidera las maneras en que se consumó la producción artística, los intercambios, desplazamientos, importaciones de obras, ... y las intenciones comunicativas asociadas a ellas. Estas nuevas investigaciones descartan examinar el caleidoscópico arte medieval español como resultado de «colonizaciones culturales». Por el contrario, argumentan cómo y por qué los autores intelectuales de aquellas obras supieron apropiarse de las propuestas estéticas y discursivas más provechosas. En estas páginas el fascinante legado artístico del Medievo hispano se presentan como lo que realmente fue: un corolario de confluencias y encuentros culturales y, por ello mismo, un crisol de innovadoras creaciones estéticas.
