Los seminarios sobre Historia del monacato desarrollados en Aguilar de Campoo se han ocupado hasta ahora casi exclusivamente de las manifestaciones monásticas que tuvieron por escenario espacios en que, social y políticamente, se iba aceptando o estaba ya consolidado con carácter exclusivo el cristianismo. En la presente edición nuestra mirada se dirige hacia un territorio en que los cristianos constituyen una minoría dentro de una sociedad progresivamente arabizada e islamizada. Es la sociedad de al-Andalus en la que, con más dificultades según avanzan los tiempos, aquella minoría cristiana bajo dominio musulmán, este es el significado de “mozárabe”, aspira a ofrecer, como en los territorios septentrionales de la Península ibérica, vías de perfección espiritual en un formato monástico. Ni las fuentes escritas ni las materiales llegadas a nosotros pueden compararse en cantidad y calidad con las que disponemos para el estudio del monacato medieval tradicional, objeto de atención en la mayoría de nuestros seminarios. Sin embargo, parece pertinente no olvidar las manifestaciones monásticas cristianas surgidas y mantenidas en el espacio andalusí, en principio, adverso a aquéllas, así como su tradición litúrgica y, desde luego, el posible influjo que la emigración monacal de al-Andalus a los reinos norteños pudo tener en la dinámica, mucho mejor conocida, de los monasterios creados en ellos.
